Iowa Women's Basketball Preview
Lisa Bluder has been a fixture in Carver Hawkeye Arena for more than 10 years as the women’s basketball coach. She has produced 230 wins for the Hawkeyes, and always puts together a competitive squad. This year’s team is no different. In fact, people are saying that this group could be one of the best in recent memory, and make a deep postseason run.
Backcourt:
Similar to the men’s basketball team, the women also graduated a top scorer and locker room leader. Camille Wahlin was the Hawkeyes’ point guard a year ago, and will leave a gaping hole in their offensive scheme. This hole could be filled by guards Jaime Printy and Samantha Logic. Printy was the Hawks’ leading scorer last year (16.9 points per game) before going down in February with a torn ACL. She has worked this offseason to rehab the injured knee, and if she stays healthy, it could be a long year for Big Ten foes. Logic was a full-time starter last year, and was a valuable asset, leading the team in rebounds and assists.
Frontcourt:
Morgan Johnson started at center last year as a junior and produced legitimate numbers (15 ppg, 6.6 rpg, and 70 blocks). With a year of experience pounding it in the paint, look for her to be dominant for the Hawks. Sophomore Bethany Doolittle played sparingly last season as Johnson’s backup, but Bluder plans to play both of the centers to create a “twin towers” style of play.
Iowa went 19-12 and made it to the NCAA Tournament last year. If Printy can stay healthy and the rest of the role players follow suit, they could be looking at a trip to the Big Dance again.
