Iowa City Stories

Coralville Restaurants

Written by Guy Martino

Minneapolis and St. Paul aren’t the only “Twin Cities” in the Midwest.

Geographically, Iowa City and Coralville are smushed right up against each other (it’s hard to figure out where one ends and the other starts). However, I do know that people associate Coralville with a stretch of 2nd St./Highway 6 called “The Coralville Strip”.

This five-mile long expanse is a consumer’s dream (or nightmare). Stores, markets, and restaurants line the strip, with these opportunities simply an easy right turn off 2nd. If a person makes it through the gauntlet of spending temptation, the final stop is the Coralridge Mall, which is sure to capture any stragglers.

Something so exhausting may leave some visitors famished. Well luckily the food choices that Coralville offers are delicious, and nearby.

In no particular ranking order, here are some excellent spots to spend an evening and enjoy good food in Coralville:

Iowa City Theatre

Written by Guy Martino

Where Art Thou Theatre?

I don’t know if there is such thing as “play season”, or a specific time of year when theatre is especially popular. But if there were, I would be willing bet that high-tide for stage junkies is rolling in over the next few months.

There are many reasons for theatre patrons to dust off the old playbills during the fall and winter months. For one, it is getting cold out, and outdoor activities are becoming less appealing by the day. Secondly, there is no better time of year to view seasonal classics. Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas plays are starting to gradually pop up in event schedules everywhere.

Halloween themed plays like Dracula, The Legend of Sleep Hollow, and The Rocky Horror Picture Show, are sure to instill quite a fright.

And of course, Christmas classics such as The Nutcracker, A Christmas Carol, and It’s a Wonderful Life always leave the audience warm and fuzzy.

Here are some of the best places to escape the wintry weather and catch great theatre in the Iowa City area:

Riverside Theatre- 213 North Gilbert Street

Located on the corner of Gilbert and Market, the quaint facade of the Riverside Theatre is an accurate indication of its insides. The space is small, with no more than 100 seats, and everything down to the lighting is soft and mellow. But if you are interested in great local theatre, then it’s in your best interest to squeeze into a seat and let your eyes adjust to the dimly lit stage.

Riverside is a non-profit organization that offers professional theatre at a reasonable price. Their upcoming shows include: Manning Up, an original written and directed by Sean Christopher Lewis, and Santaland Diaries, originally written by David Sedaris and adapted by Joe Mantello.

The Englert Theatre- 221 East Washington Street

The Englert is simply a fixture. This historic theatre has been an Iowa City landmark for 100 years, providing top-notch entertainment and atmosphere since 1912. It is located at the heart of the downtown bar-scene, but only the hardest of partiers could mistake it for a drinking establishment. The elegance of the entrance brings a nostalgic feeling, as it boasts the colors and bright fluorescent lights of the 1970s.

In contrast to Riverside, The Englert is a large-scale theatre, and is able to accommodate close to 1,000 people. Events occur nearly every night, and notable upcoming shows include: The Rocky Horror Picture Show on October 27th, The Indigo Girls on November 4th, and The Nutcracker starting on November 30th.

City Circle Acting Company of Coralville

This non-profit theatre group brings energy and education to the artistic community. Founded in 1997, City Circle has been dedicated to delivering professional quality productions to the Coralville area, along with teaching the community about theatre. They offer apprenticeship programs where people are able to learn the basics of showbiz. It is a great way for the community to stay in touch and get involved with superior theatre. Upcoming shows include: The Hobbit starting October 26th, and A Christmas Carol starting December 14th.
